Tue 17th April 2007, 10.30 – 18.00
Department of Classics, University of Reading
The reception of antiquity is now an established and increasingly popular field of academic study. However, work on non-elite culture designed to reach a mass audience can still be regarded with suspicion by those used to a more traditional view of Classics.
This conference aims to demonstrate the breadth, value and vibrancy of current work in classical reception on non-elite cultural media: from television to tourism; celluloid to cyberspace; pornography to politics. Confirmed speakers include Nick Lowe (RHUL), Gideon Nisbet (Glasgow), and our keynote speaker, Bettany Hughes (independent scholar, TV and radio presenter, and author).
We welcome non-academic participants as well as those from all levels and areas of education. All papers will be accessible to non-Classicists.
We would like to thank the Classical Reception Studies Network and the University of Reading for their sponsorship of this event.
